Salem Chapel Volunteer Fire Department was chartered October 21, 1982.  The land for the fire station was donated by Edards Reid. Mr. Reid was one of the original members of the fire department. Construction of the building began on January 16, 1983. The building was completed in April 1983.  During the construction period,  firefighters received many hours of training.  The department is operated by a corporation and Board of Directors.  The Board of Directors consist of nine people from throughout the fire district and the fire department. The original roster had 23 firefighters and 24 ladies auxiliary members.  Until  1985 the department operated solely on donations.  At that time, the residents of the district voted to enact a fire tax.  The original apparatus, a 1954 GMC pumper,  was donated by Walkertown Volunteer Fire Department.  The department has had many changes from apparatus to personnel.  Salem Chapel now responds with five apparatus.  They consist of: 1990 Grumman pumper, 1990 GMC pumper/tanker, 1985 Ford pumper/tanker, 2002 Ford brush truck, and a 1988 Chevy Suburban support truck. Salem Chapel Fire Department responds to approximately 130 fire call per year.  The roster now has 32 firefighters and 23 ladies auxiliary members. The fire department  and the members are proud to serve The Dennis-Salem Chapel area, and looks forward for many more years of community service.

                                                                             The Fireman's Prayer
When I am called to duty, God Wherever flames may rage; Give me strength to save some life Whatever be its age. Help me embrace a little child Before it is too late; Or save an older person from The horrors of that fate. Enable me to be alert And hear the weakest shout, And quickly and efficiently To put the fire out. I want to fill my calling and To give the best in me; To guard my every neighbor And protect his property. And if according to your will I have to lose my life. Please bless with your protecting hand My children and my wife.
